Genetic ultrasound

A genetikai ultrahang egy részletes, speciális szülészeti ultrahangvizsgálat – MC60

Ultrasound examinations performed during pregnancy play a key role in allowing you to continuously monitor your baby’s development. Among these, genetic ultrasound scans are particularly important, as they provide a detailed view of the foetus’s anatomical development and help with the early detection of potential abnormalities.

At MC60, we place great emphasis on personalized and attentive care. Genetic ultrasound examinations are carried out by Vasvári Viktória master sonographer and midwife, who supports you during this special period not only with her professional expertise but also with her empathetic and caring approach.

What is a genetic ultrasound?

A genetic ultrasound is a detailed, specialized obstetric ultrasound examination designed to thoroughly assess the foetus’s anatomical development and to estimate the risk of certain chromosomal abnormalities and developmental anomalies.

During the examination, the sonographer checks, among other things:

  • the anatomical structure of the foetus
  • the development of the skull and brain
  • the structure and function of the heart
  • the condition of the spine
  • the development of the limbs
  • the development of the internal organs
  • the position of the placenta
  • the amount of amniotic fluid

It is important to emphasize that a genetic ultrasound is not a genetic sampling procedure, but an ultrasound-based screening test that can indicate the suspicion of certain abnormalities.

Why is a genetic ultrasound important?

A genetic ultrasound plays a key role in:

  • enabling the early detection of certain developmental abnormalities
  • providing a more accurate picture of the foetus’s condition
  • indicating when additional tests (e.g. genetic testing) may be necessary
  • helping parents prepare for the later stages of pregnancy

Why is it recommended to attend a genetic ultrasound examination?

A genetic ultrasound is one of the most important foetal screening tests during pregnancy.

It is recommended because it:

  • provides a detailed picture of the baby’s development
  • helps detect potential abnormalities at an early stage
  • increases the safety of the pregnancy
  • contributes to the parents’ peace of mind

The examination is completely painless and safe for the foetus.

When is a genetic ultrasound performed?

During pregnancy, genetic ultrasound examinations are typically carried out at three key stages:

1st trimester – weeks 12–13
The first genetic ultrasound is used to screen for early developmental abnormalities. It is recommended between 12 weeks 0 days and 13 weeks 6 days of pregnancy.

2nd trimester – weeks 19–20
The second genetic ultrasound is the most important detailed anatomical examination.

3rd trimester – weeks 30–32
The third genetic ultrasound is performed to assess late developmental abnormalities and to monitor the foetus’s growth.

What is the FMF license exam and why is it important?

The FMF (Foetal Medicine Foundation) is an internationally recognized organization that sets quality standards for foetal diagnostics and screening examinations. This certification ensures that genetic ultrasound examinations are performed in accordance with international professional guidelines.

The FMF license is a specialized training and examination that certifies that the sonographer:

  • has a high level of theoretical and practical knowledge
  • performs examinations according to standardized international protocols
  • participates in regular quality control assessments

What genetic ultrasound examinations are available at MC60?

At our institution, high-quality genetic ultrasound examinations are available, covering all key stages of pregnancy:

12-week genetic ultrasound – also available in twin pregnancies

The genetic ultrasound performed in the first trimester is one of the most important examinations for screening early developmental abnormalities.

During the examination, the following can be assessed, among others:

  • foetal development and measurements
  • nuchal translucency thickness
  • presence of the nasal bone
  • heart function
  • signs indicating certain chromosomal abnormalities

This examination is often combined with a combined test or other genetic screening methods.

18–20-week genetic ultrasound – also available in twin pregnancies

The genetic ultrasound performed in the second trimester is the most comprehensive foetal anatomical examination.

The sonographer performs a detailed assessment of:

  • the structure of the brain and skull
  • the heart and major vessels
  • the spine
  • the abdominal organs
  • the kidneys and bladder
  • the limbs
  • the position of the placenta

This examination is essential for detecting structural developmental abnormalities.

30–32-week genetic ultrasound – also available in twin pregnancies

The genetic ultrasound performed in the third trimester is used to monitor the foetus’s growth and overall condition.

During the examination, the sonographer:

  • checks the foetus’s growth rate
  • examines the condition of the placenta
  • evaluates the amount of amniotic fluid
  • monitors foetal circulation
  • screens for certain late-onset developmental abnormalities

If further evaluation is required based on the genetic ultrasound findings, our institution provides comprehensive solutions. With the involvement of Dr. Molnár László, specialist in medical genetics, foetal genetic risk assessment tests are also available, ensuring a smooth and well-coordinated continuum of care.
