Pulmonology, also known as lung medicine, deals with diseases of the respiratory system. As well as identifying diseases of the airways and lungs, a pulmonologist diagnoses circulatory disorders of the lungs, pulmonary embolism and oedema, and pulmonary hypertension.
During the pulmonology specialist appointment, it is possible to investigate the frequently occurring bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), as well as to prescribe appropriate drug therapy.
Bronchial asthma is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the bronchi, accompanied by bronchospasm due to bronchial hyperresponsiveness, causing spasmodic coughing, choking, and wheezing in the chest.
The disease usually shows a familial accumulation, within a family the tendency to asthma can be inherited.
Bronchial asthma is diagnosed by a respiratory function test, followed by a specialist pulmonary examination and finally by a respiratory examination.
A patient with asthma requires treatment. Currently, there are many modern inhalation therapies available to the pulmonologist, with the use of which the asthmatic patient can become symptom-free.
Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, is an inflammatory disease of the mucous membranes that causes nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing and nasal itching. If two or more of these symptoms persist for several hours or days a day, it is very likely that you have allergic rhinitis.
The diagnosis is made by a skin test on the forearm following a specialist pulmonary examination.
COPD is a chronic inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes that develops gradually. Smoking is the main risk factor for developing COPD, but in addition to smoking, airway pollutants also play an important role in the development of the disease. COPD patients complain of a hacking cough and suffocation on exertion. As the disease progresses, choking is present even at rest. As the respiratory impairment in COPD can only be partially corrected, it is important to diagnose and treat the disease as soon as possible. To establish the diagnosis, a respiratory function test and a Ventolin test are required after a specialist examination.
The aim of treatment for COPD patients is to improve the bronchoconstriction that has developed, to maintain the disease level and to prevent deterioration.
If a person develops allergy symptoms, a prick test, also known as a skin test, is required.
Prick test is used to test for allergens:
